Lesson 3.4: Completing the Picture: DDP Integration

Lesson 3.4: Completing the Picture: DDP Integration

Lesson Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to integrate environmental strategies into a pupil’s Dynamic Development Plan (DDP) to create a holistic support package.

Making Support Visible

We have now explored individual strategies (Module 2) and environmental strategies (Module 3). The final step is to bring them together in the DDP. This ensures that our support is holistic and that everyone working with the pupil understands the crucial role the environment plays.

Environmental adjustments should not be an afterthought; they are a core component of the ‘Strengths-Based Strategies’ section of the DDP. They are proactive, preventative measures that create the conditions for success.

Updating Your DDP with Environmental Strategies

When adding environmental strategies to the DDP, it’s helpful to link them directly to a pupil’s needs or a specific challenge.

Example DDP Entry:

Pupil Need: Finds the transition from a noisy playtime to a quiet classroom overwhelming.

Individual Strategy (from Module 2): Practice a co-regulation breathing exercise together upon re-entering the classroom.

+ Environmental Strategy (from Module 3):

  • Offer noise-reducing headphones for the last 5 minutes of playtime.
  • Ensure a visual timetable is visible showing the first, calm activity of the lesson.
  • Provide a designated ‘calm down’ corner with soft cushions as an optional space for the first few minutes of the lesson.

Notice how the strategies work together. The environmental adjustments reduce the initial sensory and cognitive load, making it much more likely that the individual co-regulation strategy will be effective.

A Holistic Plan

Module 3 Final Task: Complete Your DDP Strategies

This is your final task for Module 3. It’s time to fully integrate your environmental planning into your working DDP.

Review the DDP you have been working on throughout the last two modules. Your task is to ensure that for every key challenge or need you have identified, you have included at least one proactive environmental strategy.

Look back at your audit notes and the strategies from the last two lessons. Are there any more visual supports, cognitive load reducers, or sensory adjustments you can add to your plan to make it even more robust?

By completing this task, you demonstrate your ability to create a truly holistic, multi-layered support plan. Congratulations on completing the Accessibility and Enablement module!
