Module 3: Accessibility and Enablement

Module 3: Accessibility and Enablement: Creating Inclusive Environments

Introduction to the Module

Having mastered the core practitioner toolkit, this module empowers you to become a proactive ‘environmental engineer’. We will explore how to audit and adapt the learning environment to reduce sensory and cognitive load, making learning more accessible for everyone. You will discover that some of the most powerful adjustments are often the simplest, and you will learn how to leverage both low-tech and high-tech tools to remove barriers and enable success.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Conduct a basic accessibility audit of a learning environment, identifying potential sensory, cognitive, and physical barriers.
  2. Implement a range of low-cost, high-impact environmental adjustments to reduce cognitive load and support sensory regulation.
  3. Select and utilise appropriate visual supports and simple assistive technologies to enhance a pupil’s communication and learning.
  4. Integrate environmental strategies into a pupil’s Dynamic Development Plan (DDP) to create a holistic support package.
