Module 1: The Neuro-Inclusive Mindset: From Theory to Practice
Introduction to the Module
Welcome to the start of your journey. This foundational module is designed to challenge old assumptions and build a new, robust understanding of neurodiversity. We will move beyond labels and theory to explore the authentic lived experiences of the children and young people we support. By the end of this module, you will have established the essential mindset that underpins every strategy and technique in this programme.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Define the core principles of the neurodiversity paradigm and the social model of disability, contrasting them with the historical medical/deficit model.
- Explain the practical difference between a neuro-affirming and a neuro-typical approach to support, using real-world school-based examples.
- Analyse the concepts of masking, monotropism, and sensory profiles, describing their potential impact on a young person’s energy, engagement, and well-being in an educational setting.
- Evaluate the language commonly used to describe neurodivergent pupils and begin to apply affirming, strengths-based terminology in your own professional communication.
- Reflect on your own practice and identify at least one specific area where you can begin to apply a more neuro-inclusive lens to better support your pupils.
